Six Reasons to Make a Big Deal about Baptism

Promote and celebrate this important step

Chris Colvin on October 25, 2017

For many churches, baptism has dropped off the radar. Viewing it as more of a ceremony than a necessity, some congregations have let it slide as a requirement for membership, a step of maturity or a process for growth.

But baptism is important. Here are six reasons you should make a big deal about it. And when you do, you’ll see spiritual maturity and numerical growth as a result.

1. It’s a Part of Discipleship

Jesus was clear about this. Baptism is a commandment. In fact, Jesus himself was baptized. The Great Commission (Matthew 28:19–20) states that baptism is part of being a disciple, a follower of Christ. If we are leaving out that aspect in our discipleship pathways, we are ignoring a clear commandment of Jesus.

2. It’s a Symbol of Salvation

Paul teaches in Romans 6:4 that we are “buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.”

When a believer makes a public profession of faith, something amazing happens.

That does not mean baptism is necessary for salvation, of course. But it is a reflection of what is happening in the life of a believer. Baptism is the outward expression of an internal reality. It’s a way to show the whole world what salvation looks like!

3. It’s a Time for Celebration

I love when churches make baptism a celebration, with rousing worship music, applause and shouts. I remember fondly baptizing my two kids and how excited they were! We invited family, had a big dinner and made it a huge event. When the whole church celebrates, everyone sees just how important baptism is.

4. It’s a Catalyst for Boldness

Taking a public step of baptism will lead to other public steps. Because baptism requires a higher level of commitment and action than what we do on a regular Sunday, it can be a catalyst for people to proclaim their faith publicly in other ways. If you want a congregation that is bold about sharing the gospel, make a big deal about baptism.

5. It’s an Act of Encouragement to Others

When a believer makes a public profession of faith, something amazing happens. It’s contagious. Others see it, and they become emboldened as well. They want to get in on the celebration themselves. Every time you baptize people, be prepared for others to want to get baptized spontaneously too.

6. It’s a Bond with the Local Church

Baptism sets a time and a place for a specific act of faith. Most people are saved in churches, but not all. And sometimes people are unsure of the exact date and time it happens. But baptism is one event they can write down in their journal. And when they do, it makes a strong connection with the local church they attend.

Baptism is important because of what it tells others. And when you make a big deal about baptism, you create an atmosphere of spiritual growth that is hard to duplicate.
