Most U.S. Pastors Report Excellent Family Relationships
Marital satisfaction exceeds national average
U.S. pastors have more positive views of their family relationships than the general population, according to a recent report from Barna Group.
Seven in 10 married Protestant pastors rate their marital satisfaction as excellent, considerably higher than the national average of 46 percent. And while finances cause a strain on many relationships, pastors with fewer resources are even more likely to report strong bonds. More than 80 percent of pastors earning less than $40,000 rate their satisfaction in marriage as excellent.
Among pastors with children under 18 years of age, 60 percent say they have excellent relationships with their kids, compared to 46 percent of U.S. adults overall.
Pastors aren’t immune to family struggles, however. About one-quarter of pastors surveyed admitted facing significant marital problems (26 percent) or parenting problems (27 percent) while serving in ministry. And nearly half of pastors said it was either somewhat true (40 percent) or completely true (8 percent) that their current church tenures have been difficult on their families.
Barna reports that 96 percent of U.S. Protestant pastors are married, and about 35 percent have children under 18 years of age. The data appeared in The State of Pastors report.
