Americans' Views Are Increasingly Liberal
Gallup reports most left-leaning views to date
A recent poll found that U.S. adults’ views on 10 of 19 values-related issues are “the most left-leaning or permissive they have been to date,” Gallup reports.
Gallup has been tracking Americans’ opinions about the moral acceptability of certain practices since 2001. Among the record findings this year, Gallup noted the following trends:
• 63 percent of Americans approve of gay or lesbian relations (a 23 percent increase since Gallup first began polling on the issue)
• 69 percent approve of sex between an unmarried man and woman (a 16 percent increase)
• 17 percent approve of polygamy (a 10 percent increase)
• 57 percent approve of doctor-assisted suicide (an 8 percent increase)
• 36 percent approve of pornography (a 6 percent increase)
“The leftward movement in perceptions of what is morally acceptable has been ongoing, with Gallup also noting shifts in 2014 and 2015,” the report says. “Since then, there have been additional, albeit slight, changes in a more permissive direction.”
No moral issues showed meaningful change in a more conservative direction compared to when Gallup first measured them, the report indicates.
