How and When Children View Media
The American Academy of Pediatrics has released new guidelines
The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) has released new guidelines regarding children’s use of media — particularly how and when they should use it. One notable item is that parents should avoid using media as the only way they calm their children down. According to ScienceDaily, “Using devices as a common soothing strategy may limit children's ability to regulate their own emotions.”
According to Jenny Radesky, one of the lead authors of the AAP study, “We have to be realistic about the ubiquity of digital media use. It is becoming ingrained in our culture and daily life. For this reason, it is even more important that parents help their children understand the healthy ways to use media from the earliest ages.”
This research isn’t just for parents. Pastors and church leaders need to be pay attention to this study because it relates to what happens in church nurseries and children’s ministries. While there are many wonderful digital media products on the market--including apps, videos and more--we need to make sure our first priority is leading children to the Lord through personal example and discipleship.
