State Constitutions Consistently Acknowledge God
Pew finds all 50 mention God or the divine
Though the U.S. Constitution makes no direct reference to God, a new report from Pew Research Center reveals that every state constitution in America mentions God or the divine at least once.
Pew reported that the combined documents reference God or the divine nearly 200 times. All but four states — Colorado, Iowa, Hawaii and Washington — use the word “God” in their founding documents. (The constitutions of those four states instead mention a “Supreme Being,” “Supreme Ruler of the Universe,” or “Divine Guidance.”)
In all, the state constitutions include 116 mentions of God, 14 mentions of a Supreme Being or Sovereign Being, seven mentions of a Creator, three mentions of providence, four uses of the word “divine,” and 46 appearances of the word “almighty.” In addition, the word “Christian” appears seven times.
Massachusetts and North Carolina have the most references to God or the divine, with 12 and 10 respectively, followed by Vermont (nine), Maryland (eight), and Maine and Texas (seven each).
