Six Christmas Outreach Ideas
Making the most of the holiday season
The holiday season is right around the corner. Christmas is the perfect time of year to reach out to unsaved neighbors, as even non-Christians tend to think about Jesus more.
There is anecdotal evidence that Christmas service attendance is growing — so much in fact that some church leaders are calling Christmas the “new Easter.” Make the most of this special season with a great outreach.
Here are six ideas for connecting with your community:
1. Give Gifts
Provide gifts to families in need throughout your community. Usually that means toys for kids, but think about other needs as well, like personal products or gifts suitable for parents. Partner with a school or government agency to make sure you are reaching those with the greatest need. Host a gift giveaway that includes a presentation of the gospel with a call for salvation. Then invite everyone back for a Christmas celebration service later in the month.
2. Help One Family
Instead of casting a large net, why not go all in on one family? This is a particularly effective way for smaller churches to maximize limited resources. Research the best way to help without hurting so the family doesn’t feel overwhelmed or embarrassed. Then adopt the family for Christmas, meeting several needs and sharing the love of Christ.
Consider simple, creative ways to
bless your community.
3. Be a Blessing
Consider simple, creative ways to bless your community. Offer a night of free childcare with fun activities for kids so parents can go Christmas shopping. Include gift-wrapping of their purchases as well. Provide parking for a nearby holiday event, give away Christmas trees, or offer classes on baking cookies and treats. The ideas are endless.
4. Plan a Movie Night
Invite the neighbors to attend a holiday movie night. In some neighborhoods, the church is the only place large enough to show a film on the big screen. Provide popcorn, hot cocoa and other treats. Either before or after the movie, give a short devotional and a call for salvation.
5. Host a Family Dinner
Christmas can be a lonely time for those who have no family nearby. Why not host a dinner at your church? Make sure there is ample seating so everyone has someone to chat with. Provide games and prizes, or even skits and entertainment. This can be a great time for those alone in your community to connect with a church family.
6. Go Traditional
Don’t discount the power of simply having church. Many who do not regularly attend will consider showing up for a special holiday service. You don’t need to provide a big production to attract people. Chances are, they’re looking for something simple, heartfelt and meaningful. A short service with hymns, a Christmas message, Communion, and candle lighting can be powerful. And some in attendance might just experience a life-changing encounter with Jesus.
