‘Nones’ Increasingly Identify as Democrats
GOP losing ground with religiously unaffiliated Americans
The growing ranks of religiously unaffiliated Americans are increasingly aligning with the Democratic Party, a new report from Pew Research Center reveals.
In 1994, about half of religious “nones” (52 percent) identified as Democrat or Democrat-leaning, compared with 68 percent who do so today.
On the other side of the aisle, the percentage of unaffiliated adults identifying with or leaning to the GOP fell 11 percentage points during the same time period, from 33 to 22 percent.
Between 2007 and 2014, the share of the U.S. adult population identifying as religiously unaffiliated increased from 16 to 23 percent, according to Pew data. While millennials are the main drivers of this trend, the percentage of nones rose across all generations.
