Happiness Dips to a 50-Year Low
The pandemic is taking a toll on emotional health
Amid the pandemic, Americans report the lowest levels of happiness in nearly five decades, according to a recent report from NORC, a research group at the University of Chicago.
Only 14% of U.S. adults surveyed described themselves as “very happy,” the lowest share since polling on the question began in 1972. This was the first time the figure had dipped significantly below 30%.
There has never been a better time to proclaim the good news.
Looking ahead, just 42% of respondents expect their children’s standard of living to surpass their own — down from 57% in 2018. This represents the lowest level of optimism since researchers first posed the question in 1994.
Anxiety, depression and irritability is a problem for 18%, compared to 13% two years ago. Similarly, 18% say they often lack companionship, up from 10% in 2018.
Those who believe they may have been exposed to COVID-19 are roughly twice as likely as others to feel overwhelmed (21% vs. 11%).
As people navigate isolation, financial difficulties, health concerns, and more, many are struggling under the weight of this unprecedented season. There has never been a better time to proclaim the good news of a God who offers hope for the weary and help for the burdened (Matthew 11:28-30).
