Teens Are Serving Through Church, Study Says

Barna reports many teens actively volunteer

Influence Magazine on September 9, 2016

Teenagers. They sleep in, goof off and if they care about social justice issues, it’s only visible on Twitter. Right? Not exactly. According to a new report from Barna, many teens not only care about issues, but they’re serving, as well.

The majority of teens (68 percent) actively volunteer at least once every few months, according to parents interviewed by Barna. What’s even better: 17 percent of teens volunteer at least once a week, and the majority of teenagers are volunteering through projects associated with a church or ministry.

As Barna reports, “The importance of the church when it comes to volunteering is a testament to the power of local congregations in galvanizing young people to serve their communities and the world.”

Senior associate pastor Mike McCrary echoes this idea from Barna in his Influence article “Mind the Gap.” McCrary says, “Intergenerational churches will intentionally plan opportunities that involve children, youth, adults and seniors serving together… Although churches should not involve people — especially young people — in service opportunities just for the sake of keeping them busy, a remarkable correlation exists between one’s involvement at church and his or her faith.”
