Six Ways to Thank Your Volunteers

Don’t overlook those who give their time

Church volunteers are my heroes in so many ways. They sacrifice their time, talent and treasure for the ministry.

No one requires them to work, but many times they are more committed than those of us who receive a paycheck. So, I want to be intentional about expressing appreciation. Here are some ways to say “thank you” to these faithful servants.

1. Say it privately. Thank them in the lobby, before or after the services, or in a personal handwritten note. Be specific about what you notice and appreciate.

2. Say it publicly. Acknowledge them in meetings, in their volunteer settings (such as kids’ church or youth group), and in front of the entire church. Take every opportunity to brag on your volunteers.

You cannot do effective ministry without a team of volunteers.

3. Say it digitally. Post a shout-out on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter. Send a short text or email. Post a brief video on Vine. Let them know you appreciate all they do.

4. Say it tangibly. A Starbucks or Amazon gift card is a great way to show your appreciation. A book could also help them in their ministry.

5. Say it socially. Show your thanks over dinner. Nothing says, “I appreciate you” more than a slice of home-baked rhubarb pie topped with ice cream.

6. Say it prayerfully. Start a volunteer prayer list. Find out their specific needs, and pray with them for God’s favor and answer.

As a church leader, I have learned that you cannot do effective ministry without a team of volunteers. So, make sure your volunteers know how valuable they are by saying, “Thank you!”
