Engaging Gen Z Priorities

How to address five key issues

Kent Ingle on February 9, 2023

Politically progressive, digital natives, and social advocates — there are countless phrases that describe Generation Z. Spanning from the age of middle schoolers to young adults, it’s a generation that doesn’t know a world without the internet and social media.

From the way companies market products to protesting discrimination, Gen Z is making waves in every aspect of our society.

As an integral part of our communities, it’s imperative we understand the issues that are important to Gen Z members so we can best help them navigate through each concern using a biblical lens.

Below are five key issues making Gen Z’s priority list in 2023.

Climate Change

Climate change at the forefront of Gen Zers’ minds is no surprise. Many Gen Z members believe it’s among the top three issues our world faces today. A majority of young adults (93% in the U.S.) say that addressing climate change is critical for the future of our planet.

In the Christian sphere, young Protestants (under the age of 40) are more likely than older age groups to say that climate change is an extremely or very serious problem. But Christians overall have mixed feelings about climate change. It has become a politically charged subject and the majority of highly religious Americans are skeptical of climate change.

It’s vital we set aside political agendas and focus on what the Bible says about the environment. God calls us to be good stewards of His creation. Genesis 2:15 says, “The LORD God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.”

To demonstrate our care for the environment, we can start by doing something simple like planting trees in our communities. While not having to agree on every detail of climate change, we can recognize the earth is God’s creation, and He entrusted it to our care.

Financial Stability

Like many of us, the economic turmoil of the past few years has negatively impacted Gen Z. Nearly half of Gen Zers who work deal with financial anxiety. Only 28% of Gen Zers say they can pay their bills on time.

What matters to the next generation should be important to us.

Despite this, Gen Z members are optimistic about their future financial stability. With financial literacy a priority for Gen Z, one in four teens plans to increase their skills in finances this year.

Money can be an uncomfortable subject, but it’s something the Church and leaders need to discuss. It’s important we remind young adults God is in control and will provide for them.

Philippians 4:19 says, “And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus.”

During conversations about finances, we must also talk to young adults about the significance of tithing and giving back — since it all belongs to God.

Social Media Activism

When it comes to social activism, Gen Z’s voices may seem a bit louder. Having grown up with social media at their fingertips, young people have the unique knowledge to disseminate information instantly and successfully. They use social media as a tool to fight for what is perceived as right.

This generation is more likely to be a part of a cause. One study found that 70% of Gen Zers are involved in a social or political cause. And social media has become an effective tool to share their concerns.

Leaders need to stay in tune with matters that concern Gen Z. Proverbs 31:8–9 reminds us to:

Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves,
for the rights of all who are destitute.
Speak up and judge fairly;
defend the rights of the poor and needy.”

The Church should be a part of the conversation when it comes to social justice issues so it can provide biblical guidance to young adults.

Mental Health

Gen Z has a lower positive outlook on life than other generations. One study found that 42% of Gen Zers have mental health conditions, with the top diagnosed conditions being anxiety and depression. Due to this, more than half of Gen Zers said that mental health is their top resolution for 2023.

By beginning to understand the challenges facing Gen Z, we can be more effective in trying to encourage them. From the sermons we preach to the way we live, the importance of mental health must be demonstrated.

As Psalm 28:7 tells us, the Lord is our “strength,” and we can put our trust in Him to help us.

With negativity and criticism everywhere, it’s vital we are a positive source of truth for young adults. We also need to remind them of resources to get the support they need.

Workplace Environment

Newer to the workplace, Gen Z is looking for ways to implement healthier work styles. It’s a generation that wants employers to care about the well-being of their workers. Young adults also see the value of a work-life balance — more than half of Gen Z workers would quit a job if it prevents them from enjoying life.

Career development is also critical. Almost three-quarters of Gen Z and Millennial workers planned to quit their current jobs in 2023 due to a lack of skills-building opportunities. Gen Z members want to stay competitive in their field and advance their skills, and leaders must meet those needs.

As Gen Zers continue to enter the workforce, it’s vital leaders are attentive to the desire for development so younger workers can feel valued and supported in their roles.

In 1 Peter 5:2–3, Peter reminds church elders of the importance to care for those under their responsibility by “watching over them” and being “eager to serve.” We should take this same approach while beginning to steward the giftings God has placed on young adults under our leadership.

What matters to the next generation should be important to us. As you begin to engage with young adults in your congregations and teams, make sure to ask them what their key priorities are for the new year and discuss the Church’s role in those areas. And always encourage young adults to discover what the Bible and Christ say about each issue.
