On Friday, Congress passed and President Trump signed into law the CARES Act. CARES is an acronym for Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act. Together with the Families First Coronavirus Response Act (FFCRA), this law provides significant help for individuals and organizations, including churches and other religious organizations, that have been impacted economically by the coronavirus pandemic.

In this Facebook Live conversation, I’m talking with Eric Kniffin about how these stimulus bills impact churches and other religious organizations. I’m George P. Wood, executive editor of Influence magazine and your host. Eric Kniffin is a member of the Religious Institution Practice Group and partner at Lewis Roca Rothgerber Christie LLP. He has litigated numerous religious freedom cases in federal court.

DISCLAIMER: This conversation is an informed “hot take” on the passage of this bill, and should not be interpreted as formal advice from the General Council of the Assemblies of God, which publishes Influence magazine, nor as formal legal advice from Eric Kniffin or the law firm of Lewis Roca Rothgerber Christie. Before your church takes action in response these new laws, you should seek the advice of your church’s lawyer or accountant.
